Pacifics Sign Two Players From California Winter League
Pitcher and Second Baseman Are First Roster Moves For 2017 Season
San Rafael, CA- Today the San Rafael Pacifics announced their first player signings for the 2017 season. Pitcher Dakota Freese and second baseman Elijah Briseno were signed with invitations to spring training.
“Both of these players will be competing during spring training for critical roster spots,” said Pacifics President and General Manager Mike Shapiro. “Based on their track records and success in the California Winter League, we fully expect them to make our club.”
Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dakota Freese was selected in the 12th round of the 2013 draft by the Oakland Athletics. While at Des Moines Area Community College, he posted a 2.66 ERA in 13 appearances, striking out 90 in 61 innings.
“I really liked what I saw from this kid during the winter league,” said Pacifics Director of Scouting Dan DiPace. “He showed great command of his pitches, showed he could go deep into games as a starter and kept hitters off balance.”
A native of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Elijah Briseno’s first dose of professional baseball came during 2015, where he played 17 games for the Las Cruces Vaqueros of the Pecos League. With Las Cruces, Briseno hit .295 in 17 games, hitting two home runs while driving in nine. He played one season with Riverside Community College in 2012 while playing for Sterling College in 2013.
“In my opinion, this kid can do it all,” said Di Pace. “He can hit for average and has some pop in his bat but he’s also one of the best fielding second basemen I’ve seen in a long time.”
