Pacifics Sign Three Players From Pacific Association Tryout
Two Infielders and an Outfielder Round Out Spring Training Roster
Pittsburg, CA – The San Rafael Pacifics selected three players to join their spring training roster following the 2017 Pacific Association tryout camp this past weekend at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.
The Pacifics signed infielders Spencer Nielsen and Dominic Bethancourt, along with outfielder Brandon Montalvo. Over 60 players participated in the tryout camp with 22 signing contracts with the four Pacific Association teams.
“We’re excited to bring to camp these three young players who we hope can fill critical roles for us,” said Pacifics President and General Manager Mike Shapiro. “All three impressed us this weekend and will have a good chance to make our Opening Day roster.”
A native of Houston, TX, Brandon Montalvo was drafted in the 40th round out of high school by the Colorado Rockies but chose not to sign. After spending his freshman season at Blinn College in Texas, Montalvo transferred to the University of Central Arkansas, where he hit a combined .300 over three seasons. In his senior season, Montalvo hit .315 in 55 games with a .417 on base percentage.
Spencer Nielsen comes to the Pacifics after a stellar three year run at Concordia University in Irvine. Over his career, Nielsen hit a combined .281 with seven homers and 85 RBI. In 2016, Nielsen posted career best numbers in batting average (.328), home runs (5), on base percentage (.396), and slugging percentage (.511). He led the 2016 Eagles in all of those categories. Nielsen is a native of Lakeside, CA.
Dominic Bethancourt comes to the Pacifics for his first experience in professional baseball. A Sacramento native, Bethancourt played collegiately at Sierra College in 2015, playing in 29 games. He was slated to play this summer for the Bakersfield Train Robbers of the Pecos League before signing with the Pacifics.
The Pacifics will begin Spring Training on May 23rd, and fans can get a glimpse of the team on May 26th when they host the New Jersey Black Sox at Albert Park at 7 PM. Tickets for that exhibition are on sale now at www.pacificsbaseball.com.
